Absolutely! Pruning chrysanthemums is something you'll want to be ready for. The best time to do it is in the spring and early summer. That way, you can encourage bushy growth and fall flowers. I get it because I was confused, too. I always cut about half of the shoots or remove the top 1-2 inches. I stop in July to develop buds and fall flowers.

When your plants reach 6 inches tall in midsummer, you can begin pinching in early July. Here's a helpful tip: Gently pinch off the growing tip of each stem, just above a set of leaves. This will encourage the plant to branch out and produce more stems, resulting in a bushier plant and even more beautiful flowers.

I've been cutting back, and it's been going well! I usually do it after flowering and during Winter Protection (Optional), and then I Fertilize it to give it some extra love.
